{"id":37624,"date":"2023-11-17T13:42:35","date_gmt":"2023-11-17T13:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/?p=37624"},"modified":"2026-06-10T15:24:35","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T14:24:35","slug":"bristol-drug-measures-need-to-increase-tomorrow-says-local-charity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/2023\/11\/17\/bristol-drug-measures-need-to-increase-tomorrow-says-local-charity\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol drug measures need to increase \u201ctomorrow\u201d, says local charity\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Take-Drugs-Seriously.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>With drug-related deaths in Bristol 4% higher than the national average, campaigners are urging councils to increase overdose centres and drug-checking services.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This comes as a man was jailed on Tuesday for attempting to convey prohibited articles into a prison.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local charities are campaigning to decriminalise drug use and recognise it as a health problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jane Slater, a spokesperson for Transform Drugs, says \u201cwe cannot police our way out of a drug problem.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under current government policy, drugs are illegal to use and doing so will result in a criminal conviction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cara Levan, from the charity Anyone\u2019s Child, deems this approach ineffective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis has been in place for over 50 years and in that time drug use has only increased&#8221;.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She continued &#8220;I would like to see local councils allowing drug-checking services more widely, allowing overdose prevention facilities where people can go to a safe place to take drugs. Taking drugs in the street makes it more dangerous for them [&#8230;] but there has never been a death in an overdose prevention facility.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.gov.uk\/files\/documents\/1703-jsna-2021-22-substance-use-final-ac\/file\">recent council report<\/a>, Bristol has the second highest estimated rate of opiate and\/or crack users of the English core cities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/wordpress-image-avoidable-deaths-1.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people standing in front of a projector screen\" class=\"wp-image-37652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/wordpress-image-avoidable-deaths-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/wordpress-image-avoidable-deaths-1-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/wordpress-image-avoidable-deaths-1-640x366.jpg 640w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/wordpress-image-avoidable-deaths-1-681x389.jpg 681w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campaigners at Transform Drugs&#8217; &#8216;Take Drugs Seriously&#8217; event in Bristol this week<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week 27-year-old Bristolian Kyle Morris was sentenced to 18 months in prison following his arrest outside <a href=\"https:\/\/prisonguide.co.uk\/bristol-prison\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/prisonguide.co.uk\/bristol-prison\/\">HMP Bristol<\/a> in&nbsp;September.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was found carrying mobile phones, tobacco, steroids, needles and syringes in a cling-film package.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DCI Ben Lavender from Avon and Somerset Police said tackling this type of crime is a \u201ckey focus for us and our criminal justice partners.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms Levan said people should encourage destigmatisation of drug use because it is linked to trauma. She emphasised \u201c90% of people who become addicted to drugs were abused as children in some way.
