{"id":37716,"date":"2023-11-17T14:30:15","date_gmt":"2023-11-17T14:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/?p=37716"},"modified":"2023-12-18T18:54:49","modified_gmt":"2023-12-18T18:54:49","slug":"college-green-sees-third-bristol-school-strike-for-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/2023\/11\/17\/college-green-sees-third-bristol-school-strike-for-gaza\/","title":{"rendered":"College Green sees third Bristol school strike for Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Sequence-01_3.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">School children gathered on Bristol\u2019s College Green today in solidarity with the people of Palestine.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event, which has happened every Friday since Hamas launched an attack against Israeli civilians, was organised by School Strike for Palestine, a group of local parents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More rallies are expected today in cities like Glasgow and Manchester in the first co-ordinated national strike. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In College Green people held placards and banners in a peaceful protest calling for an \u2018immediate ceasefire\u2019 in Gaza while children of all ages took turns to read poems and express their anger. A child as young as four took to the stand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gaza-strike.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37732\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gaza-strike.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gaza-strike-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gaza-strike-640x366.jpg 640w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gaza-strike-681x389.jpg 681w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Families from across Bristol joined calls for a ceasefire.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelly Heart, a mum from Bristol, joined &#8220;to represent all the children that are being killed and to be a voice for the innocent people&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added &#8220;It&#8217;s about people being able to live freely in their own country&#8230;and peace for everyone&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes as MPs rejected a proposed amendment to the King\u2019s Speech calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A petition demanding peace addressed to Bristol\u2019s Labour MPs &#8211; Darren Jones, Karin Smyth, Kerry McCarthy and Thangam Debbonaire &#8211; who all abstained from Wednesday\u2019s vote was signed by children attending. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/petition-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/petition-2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/petition-2-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/petition-2-640x366.jpg 640w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/petition-2-681x389.jpg 681w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Children were encouraged to sign a petition with plans to deliver it to City Hall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Green Party councillor Patrick McAllister joined the rally and labelled the government\u2019s actions &#8220;disgraceful&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/FINAL-EDIT.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charlie Swift, co-organiser of School Strike for Palestine said, &#8220;The situation is really awful but there is something really nice about coming together to try and take some kind of positive action in the face of this horrific situation&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also called Bristol\u2019s Labour MPs\u2019 refusal to call for a ceasefire &#8220;disappointing&#8221;
