This comes as a strong blow to the film enthusiast population of Bristol, which was named a UNESCO City of Film in 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Showcase indicated in their statement that the main reason for the closure was &#8220;due to our inability to agree terms on a new lease with the landlords&#8221;, after months of struggle to generate enough revenue through food and drink sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spoke to Amir, an employee at the cinema, who shared with Bower News that the closure was expected to come at some point towards the end of 2023, employees being informed a week before the announcement was made public. Amir also told our reporters that he was offered a transfer to a different Showcase branch, which he rejected due to the long commute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Locals had different opinions and feelings regarding this announcement. There is a shared sentiment of shame in respect to yet another closure, in spite of how regularly they bought tickets for screenings at the cinema. However, there is also an understanding that cinema ticket prices are often too expensive. When asked about how much they&#8217;d be willing to spend on a ticket, the average answer oscillated between \u00a35 and \u00a38, which is just under the average price range for cinema tickets in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This closure sheds light on the growing struggle faced by the cinema industry to hold up to streaming giants and lure viewers into the big screen whilst still making screenings profitable, in particular after the insular effects of the COVID-19 lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just over a month after Hengrove&#8217;s Cineworld announced its closure, Showcase Cinema de Lux in Cabot Circus has followed suit, and will be screening its final movie on the 30th of November.
