{"id":38429,"date":"2023-12-01T15:13:40","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T15:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/?p=38429"},"modified":"2026-06-10T16:00:40","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T15:00:40","slug":"south-gloucestershire-schools-left-out-in-the-cold-thanks-to-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/2023\/12\/01\/south-gloucestershire-schools-left-out-in-the-cold-thanks-to-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"South Gloucestershire schools left out in the cold thanks to cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As temperatures drop, schools in South Gloucestershire are having to reduce their heating because of spiralling costs, while \u201cteachers and children are left in the cold\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s just one of the challenges they are facing as the poorest funded schools in England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Schools-facing-heating-cuts.jpg\" alt=\"The back of a child's head in a school room\" class=\"wp-image-38431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Schools-facing-heating-cuts.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Schools-facing-heating-cuts-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Gloucestershire schools rank 151<sup>st<\/sup> in terms of the mainstream funding from national Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s claimed they are having to reduce support and services for pupils in a bid to balance their books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local school leaders and South Gloucestershire council are now calling for more funding than was announced in the Autumn Statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Gloucestershire Council Co-Leader and Cabinet Member with responsibility for schools, Councillor Ian Boulton, said \u201cQuite simply, our children are missing out on opportunities and potentially achieving their best, as headteachers are forced to make cuts\u2026 because the Government is not properly funding our schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf South Gloucestershire was funded at the average for similar council areas, we would get an extra \u00a312.3 million a year, and if we were funded at the England average that would be an extra \u00a316.9 million.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes as warnings that temperatures could reach as low as 10C (14F) in some parts of the UK today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As temperatures drop, schools in South Gloucestershire are having to reduce their heating because of spiralling costs, while \u201cteachers and children are left in the cold\u201d.
