{"id":38580,"date":"2023-12-08T14:47:53","date_gmt":"2023-12-08T14:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/?p=38580"},"modified":"2023-12-08T14:47:54","modified_gmt":"2023-12-08T14:47:54","slug":"local-activists-angered-over-failing-cop28-negotiations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/2023\/12\/08\/local-activists-angered-over-failing-cop28-negotiations\/","title":{"rendered":"Local activists angered over failing COP28 negotiations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/RObert.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bristol-based environment activists have laughed at the \u201chypocrisy\u201d of world leaders travelling thousands of miles to negotiate deals at the Cop28 conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A group of campaigners gathered in Bristol yesterday to discuss local solutions to sustainability and climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting, called People, Planet, Pastry (COPPP28) was part of a nationwide event to bring people together while negotiations take place in Dubai. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking about how most leaders have flown in private jets to an event that promotes sustainability, campaigner Robert Quarry said: \u201cIt seems very kind of hypocritical, to be honest, to spend such a lot of money on the transport or the carbon impact compared to these events (COPPP28) where a lot of people can either cycle or walk to the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;And there\u2019s zero carbon impact! It seems rather strange. Maybe they should do it by video conference.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adam Bastock, the founder of COPPP28 events across the UK, added her was also conflicted about this travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe outcomes of COP28 could easily undo all the energy emissions from travel there, which is small when compared to a global level,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;For example, for COP26, the total flights and footprint of hosting the event was less than the emissions from\u00a01 day\u00a0of\u00a0road traffic in the UK. She said it&#8217;s so interesting how outside of those rooms people talk to each other normally. And there is a sense of urgency and people use real language and you feel things are going to get somewhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;And then the minute they enter that room and sit around that table, suddenly it&#8217;s like they&#8217;re all turning slightly robotic and formal, and only talking in a particular language where everything is kind of softened and the urgency disappears.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ongoing 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP28 is seen as a chance for world leaders to collaborate on solutions to the looming climate crisis. As the conference draws closer to its end, questions are being raised about the event\u2019s effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To unify activists across the nation <a href=\"https:\/\/small99.co.uk\/people-planet-pint-cop28\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/small99.co.uk\/people-planet-pint-cop28\/\">Congress of People, Planet and Pastry (COPPP28)<\/a> meetings are being organised in over 80 cities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bristol-based environment activists have laughed at the \u201chypocrisy\u201d of world leaders travelling thousands of miles to negotiate deals at the Cop28 conference.
