to impose a 1-3% levy on all music tickets sold in Bristol has received criticism. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/news.bristol.gov.uk\/press-releases\/3be0938b-cf1f-444e-b2d7-611b19cdc755\/bold-new-strategy-being-developed-to-secure-bristol-s-grassroots-music-scene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> strategy led by the city council<\/a> and Bristol Nights aims to provide more support to the music sector, particularly grassroots music venues in Bristol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are on a mission to create a stable future for the night time creative sector \ud83c\udf1c\ud83c\udfb6<br><br>We propose establishing a Grassroots Music Fund &#8211; Image Credit \u2013 Hannah Stewart (Bower News)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mig Schillace, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelouisiana.net\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Louisiana<\/a> in Bristol, believes there are better ways&nbsp;to support music scenes in Bristol as \u201ctickets are already overpriced.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He agreed that while it was worth considering, Bristol should take on a similar route to that of mainland Europe \u2013 where established or big venues get funding from their local council to support them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Schillace is of the opinion that &#8220;a lot of money has been misspent by the council.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know Bristol city council&#8230; has put a lot of money into the [The] Beacon, which is a great venue, but [if] around a \u00a31m could have been put aside, that would then fund 10 venues for two and a half years&#8230; that\u2019s something the council really needs to come and look at,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trinity, a Bristol grassroots music venue has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trinitybristol.org.uk\/about\/news\/Latest\/restoration-levy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduced a \u00a31 Restoration Levy<\/a> on every event ticket it sells. It said this was due to unprecedented challenges like the cost-of-living crisis, rising overheads and ongoing upkeep as a result of being a Grade II* listed converted former-church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The director of culture at Trinity Community Arts, Jamell Ackford is happy with the proposed strategy. He says &#8220;it is really exciting that grassroots venues in the city are collectively working together to look at ways to support and sustain the industry and we look forward to the outcome of the feasibly study to the proposed Bristol Nights&#8217; strategy next year.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Sept 2023,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicvenuetrust.com\/2023\/09\/an-open-letter-to-jeremy-hunt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Music Venue Trust<\/a>&nbsp;said the UK was set to lose 10% of its independent venues by the end of the year due to poor funding and tax rises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Schillace says &#8220;the council spends money without any forward-thinking or without good grounds to spend a lot of money that they do not need to&#8230;, specially things like city planning.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to this, he feels that with the closure of Moles in Bath, &#8220;GMV\u2019s [Grassroots Music Venues] are more venerable than ever before.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recently announced &#8220;bold new strategy&#8221; to impose a 1-3% levy on all music tickets sold in Bristol has received criticism. &nbsp; The strategy led by the city council and Bristol Nights aims to provide more support to the music sector, particularly grassroots music venues in Bristol.
