{"id":39545,"date":"2023-12-15T14:02:07","date_gmt":"2023-12-15T14:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/?p=39545"},"modified":"2023-12-15T15:00:21","modified_gmt":"2023-12-15T15:00:21","slug":"bridge-over-m4-near-bristol-to-be-demolished","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/2023\/12\/15\/bridge-over-m4-near-bristol-to-be-demolished\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridge over M4 near Bristol to be demolished"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">National Highways has announced a bridge over the M4 motorway near Bristol will be demolished next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalhighways.co.uk\/article\/a432-bridge-replacement-works-due-to-begin\/\">A432 Badminton Road overbridge<\/a>, which links Bristol with Yate, has been closed since June after cracks were spotted in the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a detailed inspection, National Highways have decided to replace the 20-metre-wide bridge with a new one instead carrying out repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say both strengthening or refurbishing &#8220;would take a similar amount of time to complete as a full replacement of the structure, but would only extend the bridge\u2019s lifespan for a limited time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/bridge-photo-cs.jpg\" alt=\"A car on a motorway\" class=\"wp-image-39558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/bridge-photo-cs.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/bridge-photo-cs-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/bridge-photo-cs-640x366.jpg 640w, https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/bridge-photo-cs-681x389.jpg 681w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">National Highways have revealed the A432 overbridge will be demolished in 2024. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current bridge will remain closed until its demolition next summer or autumn. Timescales and costs mean National Highways will not be able to install a temporary bridge during the replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sean Walsh, Route Manager for National Highways, said: \u201cSafety is our number one priority, and our extensive and detailed investigations show that we now need to demolish and replace the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe fully understand the disruption the closure has and will cause, and we thank people for their patience as we move this project forward as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The A432 overbridge is a major road between Bristol and South Gloucestershire and was built in 1966.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National Highways has announced a bridge over the M4 motorway near Bristol will be demolished next year.
