The final bus towards Cribbs Causeway leaves its stop (C7) at 11:59pm.

In an interview with Bower News, Councillor Self stated that Bristol City Council needs a “change in legislation” as there are currently “very limited options” for night time economy workers to get home safely.

A taxi queue in the City Centre

“I don’t expect employers to necessarily pay for people to go home in the evening, especially for small businesses, that could be unreasonable.” She proposed that this could be considered as part of their evening employment package as a compromise.

Alternatively, she said that measures could include “just checking in on someone, or accompanying them to a bus stop.” She emphasised how there should be a “duty of care to the employee beyond when they finish.”

The motion was also supported by Councillor Susan Kollar, representing Bishopston. She’s “keen to open conversations with the other council members and [to] find real solutions.” Councillor Kollar maintains that late night employers need to stop “taking chances” with employee safety.

An estimated 116,300 people work in the night-time industry in Bristol, according to the Office of National Statistics in 2022.

✅ Passed: Councillors have backed our motion, committing the council to @unitetheunion's 'Get Me Home Safely' campaign.

41% of Bristol's jobs are linked to the night time economy – workers deserve to be able to get home safely at night.https://t.co/gvCcR41ejh
— Labour Bristol (@LabourBristol) November 12, 2024

Late-night worker, Lucy Hinchliffe, who is a Bartender at the Famous Royal Navy Volunteer on King Street, welcomes the proposed changes, as she has had “many an uncomfortable walk home,” as the venue closes as late as 1am. She said that her ideal situation would be to have “public transport like Uber or a taxi” which was “something the Volley used to have years ago” for their staff members.

The motion, proposed in the Full Council meeting on Tuesday (November 12th), was passed with 51 councillors for the proposal and 6 against.

Workers’ union Unite initiated the nationwide campaign to extend all employers’ duty of care to include safe transport home policies for all of their employees. Because of this, the motion was then brought to Bristol, prompting the Council to consider reviewing the existing offering by the local service provider First Bus.

This change has been effective elsewhere across the country. East Dunbartonshire Council’s Licensing Board introduced safe transport home as a requirement for any venue applying for a new or 1am license.

A Bristol councillor has demanded better public transport links and legislative change to ensure late night workers get home safely.
