With this podcast, Iris is trying to continue the conversation around Down&#8217;s Syndrome and educate people on what Down&#8217;s Syndrome really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iris\u2019 aspiration is to make Run Across an annual event and to have people take part every year on March 21 for International Down&#8217;s Syndrome Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iris\u2019 charity work for the Down&#8217;s Syndrome Association UK and Scotland started last year where she organised and ran a 1,053 mile relay <a href=\"https:\/\/eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.instagram.com%2Frunacrossuk%3Figsh%3DMWp6OGVpZnl3NGpzdw%3D%3D&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cisabelle2.watt%40live.uwe.ac.uk%7C5680027c14854a1ad32008dd056cb5ac%7C07ef1208413c4b5e9cdd64ef305754f0%7C0%7C0%7C638672686652280394%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=gV%2Fh1yB2HXys1sRhmTItPiHkVJsaItoww6vcXuacJ%2BA%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Run Across the UK. <\/a>The run took place over a two-week period and involved 100 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Run-across-Final-PW-Lite.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An interview with Iris Hammond about her work with Run Across. She talks about her inspirations and why she chose to run from Land&#8217;s End to John O&#8217; Groats.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iris ran the &#8216;glory miles&#8217; starting with 18 miles at Lands\u2019 End. Raising \u00a316,000 up to race day and then raising around \u00a31,000 a day over the 2-week period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iris was inspired to do this by her younger sister Nancy by striking up a conversation around Down&#8217;s Syndrome and changing the narrative, saying: &#8220;society doesn&#8217;t understand the capabilities of people with Down&#8217;s Syndrome&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nancy plays football every Sunday at St Pauls Community Centre, this football team is for people with Down&#8217;s Syndrome and is sponsored by Bristol City. The football team was created as a way for increasing diversity and inclusion.
