Largely in response to George Floyd protests in the US, this action became pivotal in conversations about racial inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approved wording for the new plaque will read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cOn 13th November 1895, a statue of Edward Colston (1636-1721) was unveiled here.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, the celebration of Colston was increasingly challenged given his prominent role in the enslavement of African people.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>On 7 June 2020, the statue was pulled down during Black Lives Matter protests and rolled into Bristol Harbour.
