Today marks the one-year anniversary of the closure of the former Showcase Cinema De Lux, after venue owners faced difficulties securing a lease with Hammerson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hammerson adds Odeon <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/cinema?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#cinema<\/a> to Bristol Cabot Circus <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ieInlS51K6\">https:\/\/t.co\/ieInlS51K6<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Rob Arthur (@RobArthur) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RobArthur\/status\/1862243823599939971?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 28, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrew Brown, Chair of the Economy and Skills Committee at Bristol City Council, welcomed the announcement: \u201cIt\u2019ll increase the number of screens and opportunities for people to enjoy films while contributing to the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also highlighted the council\u2019s efforts to develop a strategy creating a \u201cfairer, greener city\u201d that attracts investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dom Allin, Social Media Manager for Bristol Film Festival, expressed optimism over the new cinema, stating that it would &#8216;only be a good thing&#8217; with the potential for job creation being &#8216;absolutely fantastic&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was speculation that this location might close before Cinema De Lux did, especially given Cineworld also shut in November 2023, which left a gap in the city&#8217;s cultural landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241127_165747000_iOS.mov\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A view inside of the current Odeon in Bristol Shopping Quarter.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allin commented, &#8220;It would make sense for Odeon to move their full operations [to the Cabot Circus venue], but that would mean a bigger cinema&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closure of Showcase Cinema De Lux hasn&#8217;t been an isolated case. Odeon also shut their Weston-super-Mare venue back in June 2023 after operators said it was &#8216;no longer viable&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents hope the Bristol revival could signal a similar kind of recovery for one of their own historic cinemas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brown acknowledged the desire for an independent cinema instead of an Odeon from members of the public, but highlighted the &#8216;economic reality&#8217; of it, noting it would be unlikely a venue of its size and scale could support such a model in the current climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bristol will have a second Odeon cinema next year, at the venue of the former Showcase Cinema De Lux in Cabot Circus.
