Muslim girls at City Academy Bristol are playing football with greater confidence, thanks to 50 specially designed hijabs donated by the Sweaty Betty Foundation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This donation is part of a broader initiative by the charity, which has provided over 500 hijabs to schools across the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hijabs feature an adjustable strap to keep them securely in place during sports. The design is discreet, with non-visible logos that avoid associations with fashion trends, ensuring the focus remains on practicality and modesty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girls tested the new hijabs during a football game, offering feedback on comfort and functionality. The lightweight, breathable fabric and secure fit allow them to focus on their performance without worrying about their clothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Norah El-Gohary, cultural awareness officer at the Bristol Muslim Cultural Society, highlighted the importance of such initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople use sports as a release to forget everything around them and fully engage. If you’re distracted or not 100 percent in the game, you’re not going to get that experience. You’re going to miss out. By giving these girls the opportunity to take this major distraction away, they can fully engage and enjoy the sport, reaping the benefits.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only 47% of children are physically active, according to a 2023 survey by Sport England. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proportion of girls who meet the criteria is estimated to be even lower.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Hardeep Konsal, Head of Inclusion at City Academy Bristol, added:\u00a0\u201cOur young people are feeling empowered and inspired. Even for students who don\u2019t participate in P.E., but still need something comfortable and practical, the hijabs have been well-received for their fit, breathability, and style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The feedback from the students has been positive and it was encouraging to see students that would not usually take part in P.E. getting involved and feeling confident.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Saudi Arabia set to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup<\/a>, Dr El-Gohary believes these sport-practical hijabs are a step forward for Muslim women in sports, one that could help remove the stigma and pave the way for more role models in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
