{"id":44019,"date":"2025-11-30T21:40:55","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T21:40:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/?p=44019"},"modified":"2026-06-15T14:42:54","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T13:42:54","slug":"bristol-city-council-confirms-school-organisation-strategy-as-falling-birth-rates-bite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/2025\/11\/30\/bristol-city-council-confirms-school-organisation-strategy-as-falling-birth-rates-bite\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol City Council confirms school organisation strategy as falling birth rates bite"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/uwejournalism.net\/bowernews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/EditedTownsend-2.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sub><em>Cllr Townsend, Chair of the Children and Young Person Policy Committee (CYPPC), explained the strategy is designed with the health of schools in mind<\/em><\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last night, Bristol City Council voted in favour of the School Organisation Strategy which recommends that schools plan for fewer students starting from the 2027\/2028 academic year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strategy- informed by an investigation into birth rates, migration and future housing developments across the city- forecasts the continual decline of children being schooled in Bristol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Councillor Christine Townsend explained that the strategy is not mandatory after last nights council meeting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;re not in a position to say to an academy, &#8216;You&#8217;ve got three reception classes and you&#8217;ve got to reduce to two.&#8217; Only a third of primary schools are still local authority-run. What we can do is lead &#8211; we have the data.
