The UK government has given Rwanda a further £100 million as a part of its controversial migrant transfer deal.
The payment, which was made in April, has been followed by another £140 million being paid to the African nation.
It’s also been reported that another £50 million payment will be made next year, bringing the total to £290 million.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has vowed to “finish the job” of reviving the plan after facing a backlash from fellow Tories this week.
However, Rwandan opposition leader Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza says that Rwanda, “Can’t offer the wellbeing to those refugees”.
Speaking with Stephen Sackur on HardTalk this morning, Victoire said that “Rwanda’s resources are limited” and it is among the 25 poorest countries in the world.
In Boris Johnson’s speech in tackling illegal migration, back in April 2022, he said “Rwanda is one of the safest countries in the world, globally recognised for its record on welcoming and integrating migrants.”
However, Victoire countered this by saying that refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo are still in refugee camps after 20 years of fleeing their country. They can’t be integrated into society due to the lack of resources in Rwanda.
The UK government’s aim is to deter those fleeing their homelands from seeking refuge in the UK.
Victoire said she doubts the promises made by the Rwandan President Paul Kagame, to keep people safe.
