1. About this website
Bower News is a journalism website operated by the MA Journalism programme at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). The site publishes journalism produced by students as part of teaching, learning, skills development and public-facing course activity. Public-facing university sites commonly explain who operates the site and make clear that use of the site is subject to published terms.
By accessing, browsing or contributing to this website, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree to these terms, you should not use the site.
2. Purpose of the site
Bower News is both:
- a teaching and learning platform for journalism students; and
- a public-facing website showcasing journalism and student work connected to the MA Journalism programme.
The site is intended to support journalism education, portfolio development and course visibility.
3. Access to the site
We aim to keep the site available and functioning properly, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may suspend, withdraw, restrict or change all or part of the site without notice for editorial, legal, technical, administrative or security reasons.
Access to editorial or administrative areas of the website is restricted to authorised users only. If you are provided with login credentials, you must keep them confidential and must not allow any other person to use your account.
4. Student and contributor content
Bower News may publish articles, multimedia and other materials created by students. Content may include bylines, images, audio, video, social media embeds and other journalistic material used in the context of reporting and storytelling.
Contributors are responsible for ensuring that any material they submit or publish:
- is accurate to the best of their knowledge;
- is lawful;
- does not infringe copyright, privacy or confidentiality rights;
- does not contain defamatory material;
- does not mislead the public; and
- complies with applicable laws and regulations, university rules and editorial guidance.
Student contributors should be aware that published work may include their name as a byline and may be visible publicly and indexed by search engines.
Content on this website is published as part of a student journalism training environment and may be removed after a defined period. See our Editorial Policy for more details.
5. Editorial oversight and moderation
Bower News is an educational publishing platform and is subject to editorial oversight by authorised staff. We reserve the right to edit, unpublish, remove, suspend or refuse any content at our discretion, including where content:
- may be inaccurate;
- may expose the site, students, staff or the University to legal risk;
- breaches editorial standards;
- breaches these Terms of Use; or
- is no longer appropriate for publication.
6. Intellectual property and copyright
Unless otherwise stated, the design, branding and structure of this website, together with other institutional content, are owned by or licensed to UWE Bristol.
Student contributors normally retain copyright in their original journalism and creative work, unless otherwise agreed or required by university policy. However, by submitting or publishing material on Bower News, contributors grant UWE Bristol and Bower News a non-exclusive licence to:
- publish, host and display the work on the website;
- edit the work for legal, editorial, accessibility or technical reasons;
- archive the work as part of the website record; and
- use the work, including excerpts, screenshots or links, for educational, course-related and reasonable promotional purposes connected with the MA Journalism programme.
If you wish to reproduce any content from Bower News beyond fair dealing or ordinary linking/sharing, you should seek permission from the relevant rights holder.
By submitting material to Bower News, contributors agree that UWE Bristol may refer to or feature published work, including contributor names and excerpts, in reasonable promotional material connected to the MA Journalism programme, unless otherwise agreed.
7. Third-party content and embedded material
Bower News may contain links to external websites and may embed content from third-party platforms such as social media or video services as part of standard journalism practice.
We do not control third-party websites or platforms and are not responsible for their content, availability, privacy practices or terms of use. Your use of those third-party services is subject to their own rules and policies.
8. Accuracy and no guarantee
Bower News aims to publish accurate and responsible journalism. However, content on the site may include student work produced in a learning environment, and we do not guarantee that all content will always be complete, current or free from error.
Nothing on this site should be relied upon as professional legal, financial or other regulated advice.
9. Limitation of liability
So far as permitted by law, UWE Bristol and those involved in operating Bower News exclude liability for any loss or damage arising from use of, or inability to use, this website, or reliance on its content.
Nothing in these Terms of Use excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so.
10. Acceptable use
You may use this website only for lawful purposes. You must not:
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to the site, server or accounts;
- upload or introduce malicious software or code;
- misuse the site in a way that could damage, disable or impair it;
- use the site to harass, abuse or threaten others;
- copy or republish material in a way that infringes rights; or
- use the site in breach of any applicable law or university policy.
