Clifton Suspension Bridge will be closed this weekend between 7pm on Friday to 7am on Monday.
Bridge Master, Trish Johnson, has explained that the bridge will still be open to pedestrians, but that traffic and “cycling will be prohibited”.
“Cyclists may dismount and walk across the bridge, but as only one narrow footway will be open, cyclists are requested to avoid using the bridge if possible.”
The closure will be due to planned maintenance, as necessary scaffolding works and the installation of a new electrical panel which will involve temporary loss of power to the bridge will be carried out.
The works will also involve cleaning and painting the bridge’s chains from the roadway, as well as to conduct necessary inspections and general maintenance on the famous Bristol landmark.
“As part of this project to conserve the bridge for many years to come, we need to schedule occasional road closures to carry out works safely,” Johnson said.
The hope is that by “keeping the road open during weekdays we will minimise the disruption caused”.
The iconic bridge celebrated the 160 anniversary of its opening earlier this month and continues to be a world-renowned historic monument.
