Musicians from around the world come to Strange Brew every week to perform.
This week, Grammy-nominated star and jazz/hip-hop producer Kassa Overall from Seattle lit up Strange Brew with a support act by Irish Mellow.
Speaking on the music scene in Bristol and how the show went, Kassa said:
“The people (in Bristol) were open, and we had one of the most connecting shows of the whole tour. I wish I knew more about the scene here, but we came into the city for the gig and left the next day, Bristol feels like a more funk vibe and I can see some great music coming from Bristol.”
Kassa also described what the future of the jazz scene looks like:
“I feel like the future is going to be a whole other thing that we can’t even imagine, the future of music is going to be so incredible and drastically different that is makes of the past seem so dated.”
When asked what artists inspires the music, he produces he said: “Madlib, the artist formerly known as Kanye West and Elvin Jones.”
Alongside regular jazz gigs, Bristol also hosts the Bristol Jazz Festival and the Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival.
Madelyn who attended the gig is a music student in the city says Bristol is blessed with musical resources and inspiration:
“I feel like everywhere you go in the city; you will find someone in the music scene, and everyone here tonight is enjoying the experimentation that Kassa and his band give.”
Bristol has always had a buzzing music scene with talents such as Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky being major acts to pave the way for future musicians in the city. Genres like reggae, dub and ska are a massively influential part of the Bristol music scene alongside jazz and hip-hop.
