The Avonmouth Severnside Enterprise Area (ASEA) have opened new flood gates to prevent extreme tidal flooding into the industrial area.
The works follow the damages caused to infrastructure by Storm Bert over the weekend, and are part of an overall project expected to finish in 2026/27.
The £6.8m project is also expected to decrease flood risks in both Avonmouth Village and Severn Beach railway line, both of which are at high risk of further flooding if winter storms remain prevalent.
The works began at Lamplighter’s marsh and a 17km barrier wall is expected to be constructed in the next 3 years.
It is expected that the works will make way for brand new walking routes across the area, including the Severn Estuary.
Avonmouth and Severnside Authority plan to use a combination of different flood barriers in order for the project to be successful.
The works are expected to finish in 2026/27, with the new flood defences are expected to protect an extra 2,500 homes from flood damages for at least 60 years.
