Bristol Celebrates Two years of Being The first Harm Reduction City in The UK

Bristol celebrates its two year anniversary as a the UK’s first harm reduction city.

Harm reduction is a public health approach aimed at minimizing the negative consequences associated with behaviours such as drug use, rather than solely focusing on eliminating the behaviour itself.

This approach replaced zero tolerance policies, while still not tolerating substance supply.

At the “Design the Night” event, harm reduction was discussed by city councillor Cara Levan, night economy adviser Carly Heath, and other prominent figures.

City councillor Cara Levan explained why it is important for other cities to adopt harm reduction strategies “it will create massive health benefits and save lives.”

She clarified that harm reduction does not promote drug use but acknowledges its reality. The approach then focuses on equipping individuals with the necessary information to ensure their safety and well being.

Carly Heath, night-time economy adviser at Bristol City Council, reflected on the progress made since the harm reduction strategy’s launch. Having been involved from the outset, she remarked that after two years, the initiative is exactly where it needs to be. she highlighted Bristol’s role as a trailblazer, as well as the difficulties that come with such a title.

“What I would love is for the rest of the UK to be able to take the torch that we have lit.” Carly expressed.
