Jolly’s department store in Bath is shutting according to signs put up in the shop that advertised closing down discounts of 20%.
Bath and North East Somerset Council (BANES) owns the site and has plans to involve a “third-party occupier”.
This comes after Bristol’s Cabot Circus closed its doors to House of Fraser store in August and after a 0.7% drop in sales for clothing shops according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
BANES said in the last six years, the authority has been “working hard to ensure a secure future for this flagship store at the heart of the Milsom Quarter”.
“While plans are at an advanced stage with a third party occupier, the council is not in a position to make a formal statement at this time in relation to its proposals for the future of one of Bath’s most important department stores”.
Their is outrage among readers regarding the circumstances of its closure.
Regarding the third-party occupier, one reader commented “Could be just what is needed. Jolly’s is well past its sell-by date”.
One reader expressed frustration in the stores high prices “There’s a cost of living crisis and many of their price tags look like jokes”.
Another commenter expressed confusion in the council’s statement, saying: “Making the store a staple of milsom Street but closing the road. Insanity prevails”.
