Drivers could be forced to pay £14 a day to enter Bristol’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ), a report for councillors has proposed.
The CAZ was first introduced in November 2022, following concerns about high levels of air pollution.
In the CAZ’s first year of operation (Nov 22 – Dec 23), it was found that 88% of journeys into the zone were made in ‘compliant’ vehicles, and were therefore unaffected by the charge.
Smaller reductions in carbon dioxide from 2023 to 2024 have left the council feeling that the CAZ charges are no longer a strong enough deterrent, and cited rising inflation and changes in travel trends as the reason for the proposed cost raise.
Councillors will meet on November 6 to decide whether the hike in prices will go ahead.
