The Bristol Green Party have said it is “disappointing” that all four of Bristol’s Labour MPs abstained from voting for a ceasefire in Gaza.
This comes ahead of the Green Party’s event on Saturday, where they will announce their new parliamentary candidates.
Green Party’s Carla Denyer held firm in the Green Party’s view on the current situation in Gaza, “The Green Party have been very clear in calling for an immediate ceasefire and release of all the hostages and uninhibited humanitarian aid – those need to happen immediately to stop the harm to civilians.”
All four of Bristol’s current Labour MPs abstained from voting.
Labour MP for Bristol West Thangam Debbonaire, released a statement explaining her decision on her X feed, “Pauses of a few hours are clearly nothing like enough. I am continuing to push for a full and immediate pause in fighting across the whole of Gaza to get more food, fuel, water and medical supplies in.”
Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, came up against rebellion within the Labour party with 56 members going against his vote decision.
Ten Labour front benchers have stepped down from their roles.
The SNP accused the Tory and Labour party of being on “the wrong side of history”.
Both the SNP and the Green Party called for an immediate ceasefire.
Alongside their firm stance on Gaza, Bristol Green Party have changes coming to the party.
Ms Denyer announced that she will be stepping down from her current role to focus on becoming Bristol’s first Green MP.
Ani Stafford-Townsend is the Councillor for Central Bristol and will be speaking at Saturday’s event. She says it’s a “really exciting time in the party”.
According to Ms Stafford-Townsend there is a “huge breadth of experiences” coming from the new candidates, some with “really strong activist backgrounds”
While the situation in Gaza remains top news, Saturday’s event will focus on the Green Party’s future.
Congresbury and Puxton now welcome a Green Party Councillor after Phil Neve won the by election with 64% of the vote.
The announcement event will be taking place at Future Leap on Gloucester Road on Saturday the 18th November between 3pm-6pm.
