Swindon South MP Heidi Alexander has been appointed the new transport secretary this lunchtime (Friday 29th November).
This follows the swift resignation of Louise Haigh yesterday after reports of misconduct.
Alexander was formally Shadow Health Minister under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour party in 2015-2016, before moving to be Sadiq Khan’s deputy transport mayor from 2018-2021.
She then became the Justice minster and local MP for Swindon South where she has stayed until the announcement of her promotion earlier today.
The change in role has been confirmed by 10 Downing Street stating that ‘The King is happy to report Heidi Alexander as Secretary of State of Transport’ and has followed with confirming that ‘Louise Haigh MP has officially left the government.’
It was announced that Haigh resigned from her role early this morning following a investigation involving a ‘mugging on a night out’, where she claimed to have her phone stolen.
She has since revealed that this was ‘a genuine mistake from which I did not make any gain’, and has quickly resigned from Sir Keir Starmer’s cabinet.
