Bristol’s Christmas Market traders fear lower sales

Bristol’s Christmas Market is open from today until December 23, featuring festive goods, food stalls, and live entertainment.

Although the market is expected to attract big crowds, one trader says even if it’s busier, they could end up selling “less and less”.

Other traders she has spoken to feel the same. “Unfortunately, it’s not just my opinion, it’s [also] all the other traders.”

Another trader is worried for this year’s sales, saying he needs to “see how it goes”, and “make a call” based on how things go this year.

“It has been very hard for us… We were £5,000 less on sales last year than what we would have taken a year before.”

Another trader said the cost of living crisis is impacting customer spending habits, and therefore affecting their trade.

“Yes it’s affecting business because of the cost of living is going up so people [are] not gonna spend the money,” he said.

The Bristol Christmas market website advertises experiences ranging from £15 all the way to £45, with more experiences, such as ski alpine gondola and hot air balloon themed tables, being offered as well as the featured stalls.
