The head of the Metropolitan Police has said Uk policing will fail unless urgent reforms are made.
Sir Mark Rowley said the current policing system is struggling to address modern forms of crime, such as organised crime, money laundering, and online fraud.
These crimes are increasing across regional and international borders, making it more important for police forces to work together.
He has proposed reducing the number of police forces from 43 to between 8-10 regional forces. The changes would also include local policing units and new national police service.
“If we’re wasting all of this money in 43 headquarters and all these arrangements that’s actually drawing resource away from the local,” he said.
He believes this would reduce the costs and administrative paperwork, allowing more officers to devote their time and attention to fighting crime.
He has also expressed concern about the financial pressures and outdated technology facing police forces, noting that years of underinvestment have made it harder for them to respond effectively to crime.
